About The LEAK ALBUM:

As for the song itself, the wait was well worth it. Along with it came a video (directed by Lamar and Dave Free), where Lamar used a series of deepfakes to morph into O.J. Simpson, Will Smith, Kanye West, Jussie Smollett, Kobe Bryant and Nipsey Hussle. The video opened with a statement that read “I am. All of us.” It was attributed to Oklama, which also happens to be the site Lamar has been using to share news on the album.

Deep Voodoo, the studio ran by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, was credited for the deepfakes, with the duo getting a special shoutout.

Enveloped in a sample of the sultry "I Want You" by Marvin Gaye, "The Heart Part 5" addresses relationships – between Lamar and his fans, between the cultures, between a Black person and this country. Kendrick conveys this complexity in a minimalist video featuring only a single shot held on Lamar, his face intermittently deepfaked into O.J. Simpson, Will Smith, Kanye West, Jussie Smollet, Kobe Bryant and Nipsey Hussle.

In the half-decade since Lamar released “Damn” in April 2017, a lot has changed for the celebrated MC.

The image arrived on Wednesday (May 11) featuring K. Dot sporting a crown of thorns holding a child while a woman sits on a bed cradling an infant. All are sporting white tops, while Kendrick is wearing khaki pants with a gun tucked into his waistband.

The caption read simply, “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers.” The cover art reveal follows the release of “The Heart Pt. 5,” which arrived on Sunday (May 8).

Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers is expected to arrive on Friday (May 13). It serves as the official follow-up to 2017’s Pulitzer Prize-winning album DAMN. Needles s to say, Kendrick fans have been eagerly awaiting the project for over five years.

Early projections have Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with over 350,000 total album-equivalent units upon its release. By comparison, DAMN. landed at No. 1 with over 603,000 total album-equivalent units in its first week of release, becoming his third consecutive album after 2015’s To Pimp a Butterfly and 2016’s Untitled Unmastered to debut in the coveted spot.

Lamar ended the yearslong hiatus last Sunday when he released “The Heart Part 5,” his first song as a lead artist in more than 1,549 days, according to Hip Hop by the Numbers. The single comes just days ahead of his fifth studio album, “Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers,” which is slated to drop this week. The nearly six-minute song is the fifth installment in his long-running “The Heart” series and is an impressive, emotionally charged return to form.

The accompanying music video, which shows Lamar’s face morph into deep fakes of six high-profile Black public figures — O.J. Simpson, Kanye West, Jussie Smollett, Will Smith, Kobe Bryant and Nipsey Hussle — instantly went viral upon its release. As of press time, it has tallied more than 12 million views on the platform.
